I spent some time volunteering engineering support to artists-in-residence at Eyebeam. I did more of this kind of “poetic engineering” work later at Human Grid, and earlier at Cooper Union.
Taeyoon Choi was immersed in his Camerautomata project, where he was in the process of constructing Charlie, a delightful robotic duck designed to capture photographs with people at popular locations throughout New York City. The robot's simple autonomous actions aimed to mirror the predictable selfie behaviors often exhibited by visiting tourists.
Charlie served as Taeyoon's icebreaker, initiating conversations that allowed him to unveil the vast range of diversity of people and their stories, concealed just beneath the seemingly uniform tourist persona.
I assisted Addie Wagenknecht and Stefan Hechenberger (working together as Nortd) on an interactive “wall of strings” installation for an Eyebeam fundraising event.
